Class sessions will occur primarily online; activities will include presentations, discussions, and small group work. Thus, participation is critical to this course.

Session 1. Technology Issues & Policies Overview

This session will serve as an overview to the standards for technology leaders, and their associated roles and responsibilities, related to educational technology social, ethical, and legal issues and policies. For students just joining us, it also introduces the course's instructor, students and goals, as well as the Educational Technology Leaders online learning environment.

Session 2. Ethical Issues and Policies

This session will examine ethical issues related to technology use in education, including how they are dealt with in acceptable use policies and equitable access. We'll consider how to communicate and model practices and policies in keeping with these ethical codes of conduct.

Session 3. Social Issues

This session will examine the many new social issues brought up by Web 2.0 technologies--from MySpace to blogs. We'll consider how current school policies translate to these new technologies.

Session 4. Safety Issues and Policies

In this session we'll consider personal safety and health issues, such as privacy and filtering, that are raised in a technology-rich social computing environment. We'll consider how to identify, communicate, model, and enforce practices and policies in keeping with these ideas.

Session 5. Legal Issues and Policies

This session will consider how technologies generate new issues and struggles to sort out--such as around student speech and privacy--and how exisiting policies do or don't address legal concerns related to these issues.
